The 6th annual All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off 2016 in Kinsale, Co Cork on Sunday 24th April, is the highlight of a two-day food festival hosted by the town’s Good Food Circle, an association of local restaurants. Chowder is on the menu of most Irish pubs and restaurants these days, and every year Kinsale, an attractive port on the south coast, known as Ireland’s “gourmet capital”, and the starting point of the Wild Atlantic Way, holds a competition to find the “All-Ireland Chowder Champion”.

On Saturday, 23rd of April the town’s streets and quays will be taken over by the Taste the Wild Atlantic Way Street Food Festival, an open-air street market with food stalls, live music and family fun.

On Sunday the 24th of April, from 2pm–4 pm, over thirty chefs from all over Ireland will compete for the title of All-Ireland Chowder Champion.

For €15 the public will be given a card entitling them to a sample of each chowder, and will vote for the winner. The All-Ireland Chowder Champion 2016  will receive a handsome trophy, and travel to Newport, Rhode Island, Kinsale’s twin town, next summer as a guest chef.

West Cork Chamber Music Fest

West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2016

01/07/2016 - 09/07/2016 — All Day — West Cork Chamber Music Festival — Bantry

West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2016

The West Cork Chamber Music Festival celebrates its coming of age in the company of Beethoven, from an early string trio to his final string quartet, culminating in a single concert featuring one of his most adventurous quartets, his last violin sonata and the great Archduke piano trio.

In contrast the Festival can always be relied on to delve into unusual corners of the repertoire, one Coffee Concert features love songs by women composers from eighteenth century Italy, another alternates arias from Bach Cantatas with chorales from remote Swedish communities in a programme devised by Festival favourite, Maria Keohane, while a late-night concert sees a setting of Kafka texts for soprano and violin.

The Festival will explore a rich selection of major song cycles by composers as varied as Schubert, Janáček, Fauré, Ravel and Kurtág. Tenor Mark Padmore joins with the outstanding pianist Paul Lewis in Schubert’s Winterreise.

Two nights later he sings Janáček’s rarely performed Diary of One who Disappeared with pianist Julius Drake and French mezzo Anna Reinhold as the seductive gypsy girl.

The Festival marks two of the 1916 centenaries with new works by Irish composers. Visiting Quartets will be the Borusan from Istanbul, the Kelemen from Budapest, the multi-national Chiaroscuro led by Alina Ibragimova alongside Cork’s own Vanbrugh Quartet
