Daniel Corkery Summer School

Daniel Corkery Summer School

14/07/2013 - 19/07/2013 — 12:00 am — Inchigeelagh — Macroom

The Daniel Corkery Summer School is an annual Inchigeelagh village event of music, workshops and lectures, to celebrate the life of Daniel Corkery, 1868-1964, who lived in and loved the village.

Daniel Corkery, native son of Cork, was a poet, playwright, novelist, critic and nationalist, perhaps best known for his book ‘The Hidden Ireland’ (1924), his classic study of literature in the Irish language. He was also a talented water-colourist; and in all things he was a teacher. So, when in 1996, a group of people got together privately in Inchigeelagh to share their music, poetry and drama The Summer School was born and Daniel Corkery became the theme. The experiment was successful and from it germinated the idea of a free cultural gathering to be held annually in the village. The subjects covered were to be mainly those which interested Corkery himself: painting, poetry, music and politics.

The Summer School is run entirely upon donations and some small grants. Events are free, except for the coach trip and main concert, where a small charge is made to defray expenses. So please give what you can, if you can. Thank you!
